Most homes have 15 to 20 % of the floor area devoted to windows. This percentage can increase 5 to 10 % if your home has large glass walls. You may use an average cost of $2.23 per sq. ft. of floor area for vinyl units, and $3.48 per sq. ft. of floor area for wood clad to establish a base price if you don't know your window sizes. These averages assume 15 % of floor area as being glazed.
Although the table below is for western US only, pricing is fairly uniform throughout the US. You should, however always obtain a quote on wood clad and specialty sizes. Aluminum framed windows are similar in cost to vinyl.
WINDOWS COST RANGE
Use the chart below to collect some basic costs on your windows. These costs are for standard dual glazed window units. The type shown are those most commonly used. Many other types are available.
For windows please note:
- All fixed sizes are reversible.
- Vinyl windows listed are white and almond only.
- Jobsite delivery generally costs around $150.00.
- All items are standard dual glazed (not low-e, etc.)

Wood Clad window units are fiberglass frames with awood veneer interior and a large selection of colors for the exterior.
Among the other items to consider are:
- Insulation value (higher values may be mandatory)
- Clear vs. obscure glass in bathrooms
- Safety and/or tempered glass near doors, floor and elsewhere
- Long term maintenance - wood clad vs. vinyl
- The color of vinyl window units - choose to match
- Skylights - fixed and openable
DOORS
Doors come in many different flavors. You should make your final choices based on the style of your home and it's décor.
DOORS COST RANGE
Use the chart below to collect some basic costs on your doors. These costs are for the most commonly used door types and sizes.
For doors please note:
- Front or Entry door units vary widely in cost.
- Doors listed are pre-hung (include door jamb and hinges) with no trim.
- Doors shown are stain grade with stain grade jambs.
- Jobsite delivery costs vary - sometimes free - you should get a quote.
- Jamb widths are typically 4-5/8" ext., and 4-9/16" int.
- Chart sizes are width X height
- Custom openings will cost more.
Among the other items to consider are:
- How much weather will my exterior doors be subjected to
- Clear vs. paint grade jambs, trims and mouldings
- Security, fire resistance and noise transmission issues
- Storm doors, screen doors and weatherstripping
- Allowance for the cost of hardware (doorknobs, etc.)
- Specialty items such as shower doors
These costs and prices are not quotes. They are simply cost benchmarks developed over time through experience and the use of national averages. These values are adequate for determining initial budgets and project feasibility. All prices must ultimately be validated using final plans by your realtor, suppliers, builder and contractor(s).
